Generator Lifecycle Replacement Project

Brief

Rigby Morrison were requested by Incentive FM to project manage the removal of two dilapidated generators, that were providing standby power to Liverpool Victoria’s HQ at Frizzell House in Bournemouth. A single generator was to be installed alongside, new switchgear control that could power both parts of the building using a single generator. If possible, the project hoped to negate the need for purchasing a second generator saving approximately £450,000 in plant lifecycle replacement costs. The budget for the project was £504,000 and the work was scheduled to take 6-month to allow completion before LV’s financial year-end.

Solution

Our consultants carried out a review of the project and devised a robust strategy and schedule of works to control the client’s business risk, whilst ensuring the project benefits were achievable within the time constraints. We provided our project management expertise throughout the project, using a tailored Prince methodology. Prince 2 was used on this occasion because there was a strong need to control communications and business risk during a series of building power shutdowns. Furthermore, there was a high likelihood that there would be a need to alter the project scope to accommodate the need for change to alter the original switchgear installation.

Results

After three controlled power shutdowns, the project was completed within the required budget and time schedule. The two old generators had been safely craned off the roof and the new generator was installed alongside a new control system. Commissioning was conducted under the watchful eye of our team and the project was handed to operations.

Feedback

Our client was extremely pleased with the outcome of the project and we were complimented on how well we controlled the risks associated with the power shutdowns and our communications plan had been well received by all. keeping the business informed of our requirements and progress throughout the project.
